Interesting Fact: Roy lived and studied in Lebanon for two years, and traveled in over 30 countries during that time. Zoe Anne, Roy's wife is the daughter of world famous rodeo clown, Wilbur Plaugher. Zoe Anne was also a Pep Girl at Fresno State. Roy and Zoe Anne have 7 grandchildren.
Favorite Foods: Middle Eastern, Chinese, Italian, Southern cooking, berry pie with ice-cream!
Hobbies: Golf, travel, basketball, studying history, spectator sports and my date night with Zoe Anne.
Education: M.Div., Master of Divinity, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California; B.A. Ohio Wesleyan University, Delaware, Ohio; Special Studies: Near East School of Theology, Beirut Lebanon, Junior year abroad, American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon. Roy recently returned from a trip in Israel.
Bio: Roy was born and reared in the hills of Eastern Kentucky, in the coal mining town of Harlan. He had a wonderful upbringing under the love and care of Roy and Maxine Pope. His Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Nathan Pope, was a Methodist Circuit Rider who brought the Gospel into the mountain area of Kentucky on horseback from the Tidewater area of Virginia. In fact, Roy has a copy of his prayer journal in which Nathan was praying for his future children's children to come to know Christ. Sure enough, every generation since then has had a minister in the family. Roy's son, Nicholas is the latest Pastoral candidate, as he just completed his seminary training at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston in May, 2007.
"Moses," as Zoe Anne calls Roy, graduated from Harlan High School, and went on to Ohio Wesleyan University (a banker sent him to college free) and then Fuller Theological Seminary. He has pastored churches in Wilmore, Kentucky; Sanger, California; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and; planted a church in Charleston, South Carolina. He also served on staff of the Evangelical Free Church of Fresno for 7 years, prior to receiving a call back into Church Planting here in Clovis.
Zoe Anne and Roy were both widowed in the same month back in 1982. That experience has given them a heart of compassion for people who have experienced loss, and the experience of bringing up six children has given them a heart for marriage and family issues. Roy loves to preach, to be involved in compassion ministry, to see people come to Christ, and to visit with his children and grandchildren. When he gets a chance he loves to travel with Zoe Anne.
Roy's life verse is I Corinthians 2:2 "I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified"
